The chocolate chip cookie is a happy accident born out of a baker’s shortage of baker’s chocolate in the 1930s. Using semi-sweet chocolate instead, the baker created a new type of cookie that quickly became a favorite. The first chocolate chips were not created until 1940 by Nestlé, as a response to the cookie’s popularity. Chocolate chips, or “morsels,” were sold with a chopping tool for easy chunking. Today, the chocolate chip cookie is an American classic with mass appeal. Celebrate this beloved treat on National Chocolate Chip Day, held annually on May 15th.
