What Line Are You Supposed To Cross To Go From Being A Friend To A Best Friend?
I’ve developed a theory over the years. The line between friend and best friend is crossed at approximately 2:17 a.m. A few summers back, I had called my best friend Jodie in an emergency at exactly that ungodly hour. I had lost my house keys, and I wasn’t expecting her to answer, but she did anyway. Her first words weren’t “What’re you doing calling me so late?” They were, “Alright, what have you done now?” I learnt the easy way: friends will help you move apartments. Best friends answer suspicious phone calls even at 2:17 in the morning, ready to put their shoes on and leave the house, if need be.
A friend comes over and asks for the Wi-Fi password. A best friend already knows it. In fact, they probably connected three devices already and never left the network. That’s kind of how best friendships work. Somewhere along the way, all the formalities disappear. You stop asking permission to grab a snack. You finally stop apologizing for calling so late. You stop pretending you’re not tired. One fine day you just realize this person has witnessed five different versions of your life and somehow decided to renew their subscription every year. That’s a special kind of loyalty. (Cheers to you Jodie.)
So, Happy Best Friends Day to the people we’d trust with our lives… and, perhaps more importantly, our search history.
This Week, We’re also Celebrating…
World Ocean Day (June 8th)
Happy World Ocean Day! Home to whales, coral reefs, and at least three creatures that look completely made up and fictional.
Profess Your Love Day (June 9th)
If you like someone secretly, this is your day to tell them before another year slips by. Happy Profess Your Love Day!
Iced Tea Day (June 10th)
Iced tea is what happens when tea decides to stop taking life so seriously. Enjoy a cold glass if you can.
Red Rose Day (June 12th)
Happy Red Rose Day! To the flower that has carried the romance industry on its back for centuries.
Flag Day (June 14th)
Flags have survived wars, storms, history books, and that one guy who always hangs them upside down by accident. This one’s for all the flags around the world.
National Children’s Day (June 14th)
Happy Children’s Day! May we all keep a little bit of childhood wonder tucked away somewhere underneath all that adulthood.
A Birthday Tradition You Could Probably Steal
A buddy of mine, Greg recently turned forty. I’ve known the man for nearly fifteen years, which is long enough to collect an alarming amount of material for a roast. So when we told him we were throwing one for his birthday, he wasn’t exactly thrilled. In fact, he spent the entire week preparing for public humiliation. And honestly? Fair. We all had stories. The bad haircut phase. The disastrous camping trip. The time he confidently gave directions and somehow added two hours to a twenty-minute drive.
The night finally arrived. Greg sat down, braced for impact, and the first speaker stood up. The story started exactly like a roast… then suddenly turned into a tribute.
One friend talked about the time he drove three hours to help him move. Another remembered a joke he’d told fifteen years ago that the group still quotes today.. For two straight hours, people shared stories about the times Greg had shown up for them, helped them through rough patches, made them laugh, or quietly made their lives better. The man laughed until his face hurt and he cried twice, which, naturally, is now part of the roast forever. It reminded me that birthdays aren’t really about getting older. They’re one of the few moments in life where you get to see the difference you’ve made in other people’s stories. And that’s a pretty remarkable gift, if you ask me.
We’ll see you next week. In the meantime, try not to volunteer for anything that starts with “It’ll only take five minutes.” Stay curious. Stay kind. Bob out!

Hi Bob!
I have very much enjoyed your newsletter and looked forward to the smile it put on my face every day. I will miss it but honestly I see so many bloggers/You Tubers having emotional and mental issues because of being so tied down to their subscribers.
I respect your decision and will be here waiting for your blog on Mondays.
God bless,😊🙏
